Greetings fellow foodies,
Unless you’ve been living under a kale leaf shaped rock, it’s pretty clear that one of the latest and most prominent food trends to sweep through ol’ Brisvegas and the shores of Australia in general, has been the American fare and Burger craze. Leaving, in its dust, a trail of dirty fries, mouth-watering Instagram feeds and more than a few pairs of jeans that are now, arguably harder to button up.
Many businesses have tried to ride the burger wave of fortune, some experiencing significantly more success than others. With this abundant array of food outlets offering more ways to raise your cholesterol levels than you can poke a stick at, none have had quite the stay power or reputation as the OG go-to burger joint in Brisbane; Bens Burgers. And for a very good reason…
The best thing about Ben’s is it’s simplicity; from the menu, to the layout of their Fortitude Valley and West End stores, Ben’s don’t fuck around on any account. Their dinner and lunch menu offer up three burger options; the Classic, Cheesy and Veg - oh and sorry, no alterations. You don’t mess with perfection. Also when purchasing a beverage to go with your meal there is no sugar free option. So no, you may not have a diet coke with your cheese burger and dirty fries - let’s not be silly people.
If there is one thing we know here at Salad it’s our burgers (well that and killer clothing) and personally we just can’t go past Ben’s Classic burger. It is a perfect blend of the traditional goodies; pickles, onion, tomato, lettuce, American cheese and all the classic condiments. The real hero of the Classic is Ben’s beef patty. Making the word ‘moist’ seem less weird, it is the only way to describe the succulent treat that is wedged between what we think is one of the best set of buns going round.
The Cheesy burger is exactly what you’d expect it to be; beef patty, American cheese, packed full of jalapenos and a hella good special sauce that has no time for lettuce leaves. For the animal lovers out there, Ben’s also offers a pretty decent vegetarian option. The mushroom and parmesan burger is actually so good that even the fully pledged carnivore can eat it and not miss the meat… much.
Unlike a dirty KFC Zinger which has it’s time and place, Ben’s is a great all rounder. It’s the kind of burger you go to with the boys for beers, a cheat meal with the girls, first pick for an office lunch out, or as you lay in a cocoon of regret on a Saturday morning, have an Uber driver deliver it to your door step as the ultimate hangover cure. I promise you these burgers can heal your broken soul. And if you’re feeling extra indulgent, Chocolate Hershey’s thick shake anyone? Treat yo self.
If you’re a Brissy local or in town for a while, be sure to check them out!
