We got our first print ready to go and sent it off to be made. Quietly patting ourselves on the back we thought, ‘this is it, we’re onto a winner’.
Then we got the sample back…
We weren’t happy with the colours or fit and we realised that we may have been a bit naive in embarking on this endeavour. Maybe this ‘ultimate’ shirt we had been looking for was hard to find because it was bloody hard to make. If nothing else, we were passionate about our brand, confident in our business model and had a clear vision for Salad.
So back to the drawing board we went...
What followed was months of redesigning prints, matching colours, choosing fabrics, tailoring and then re-tailoring patterns until we were finally happy with every aspect of our shirt.
Around this time, we realised that Salad was missing a vital ingredient, we’d left out half of the population! We now had four great prints and it was time to adapt them for women’s wear. Though this would add a lengthy amount of time to our design and production process, we were determined to launch with a first collection of both men and women’s wear.
If we thought creating the right fit for a men’s button up shirt was challenging, then there was nothing to prepare us for the wonder and mystery of dressing the female body. However, we were more than up for the challenge. With the same passion and attention to detail that we applied to our men’s shirts, we went about creating a simple yet effective skirt and a stylish crop top for women.
It has been a long road since the first two meters of fabric we received in January. Nine long months of learning, determined work and passion has gone into the first collection you now see before you. Over the coming weeks we will be shooting with some talented models and photographers to keep you updated with content and news. We hope you stick with us on this journey and stay tuned for the exciting things we have to come.
Matt and Jordan.
